New York Public Library
Restoration
6th Avenue
Newport was commissioned to restore the original luster to this breathtaking building, and it required some intense labor to bring New York City's public treasure back to her former glory. All ceiling cornices and ornamental plaster were meticulously cleaned, repaired, painted, gilded, and reglazed. Flat surfaces and plastered moldings were carefully ingrained to match the existing faux wood. The stately Caen stone that girds the walls and arches of the library was cleaned and reglazed. Damaged decorative plaster was repaired or, in cases of severe damage, replicated.
